We contributed to the television apps of a streaming platform built around live sport.
Driven by a remote
An interface with no cursor
Scroll and focus walks the interface exactly as the arrow keys lead it.
Categories on one row
The first screen after switch-on. Focus sits on a category and the arrows move it between Live, Sports, Shows and Movies. No cursor, exactly one place is highlighted at any moment.
What is on right now
Into the live streams. Focus drops a row and pages through matches currently playing. A remote has four directions, so the layout has to make sense as a grid rather than as a canvas.
Four matches side by side
Multiview splits the screen between several streams at once, with live statistics. Focus moves between the tiles, each one is a separate stream to keep fed.
The DVR library
What the viewer recorded. Focus moves into the library and pages through the saved items.
Context
fuboTV (NYSE: FUBO) is an American streaming platform built around live sport. The base offering carries more than 100 channels, DVR recording and up to ten simultaneous streams in one household; more than 30,000 live sporting events pass through it in a year. It runs on the web, on iOS and Android, and on television platforms, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Chromecast and smart TVs. Multiview lets a viewer follow several streams at once with live statistics.
Our role
We contributed to the television apps for the Roku and Samsung Tizen platforms as part of the development team, not as a standalone supplier.
Technical approach
A television app is a different world from web or mobile, but technologically it sits closest to the web, which is why it is filed under web applications rather than mobile. Roku has its own language and framework (BrightScript and SceneGraph), Tizen on Samsung sets runs on web technologies, and what joins them is what separates both from everything else: there is no touch and no cursor. All navigation rests on focus state and four arrow keys, so a layout has to work as a grid and it has to be obvious at every moment where focus sits. On top of that comes television hardware an order of magnitude slower than a phone, and the fact that every set has a different safe area, which is what clips the edge of an interface on some receivers.
